DeviceNet is a networking system that falls under the generic category of Fieldbus. Fieldbuses are generally defined as industrial networking systems intended to replace traditional wiring systems. Figure 2-1 shows typical wiring requirements for transferring signals between a controller and two nodes. A fieldbus topology such as DeviceNet allows the same configuration to be achieved using only 2 signal wires plus shield and power. This method of communication significantly saves on the amount of wiring required and can improve overall system reliability, as the number of interconnections is greatly reduced.
SI-DeviceNet
SI-DeviceNet provides follower/slave connectivity. It is possible to use several SI-DeviceNET modules or a combination of SI-DeviceNet modules and other optional modules to add additional functionality such as extended I/O, gateways or additional PLCs.
