CX5020 | Embedded PC with Intel Atom® processor

The CX5010 and CX5020 are Embedded PCs from the CX5000 series based on Intel Atom® processors and differ only by the CPU version. The CX5010 has a 1.1 GHz Intel Atom® Z510 processor, while the CX5020 has a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom® Z530 processor. Apart from the clock speed, the two processors also differ by the fact that the Z530 features hyperthreading technology, i.e. it has two virtual CPU cores for more effective execution of software. Depending on the installed TwinCAT runtime environment, the CX5010/CX5020 can be used for the implementation of PLC or PLC/motion control projects (with or without visualisation). The extended operating temperature range between -25 and +60 °C enables application in climatically demanding situations

The system

The CX5000 series devices are DIN rail mounting fanless embedded PCs with direct connection for Beckhoff bus terminals or EtherCAT terminals. Unlike other CX device families, the CX5000 series has a fixed, non-expandable number of system interfaces. The case design of this series is optimized for ruggedness and compactness. No modular expandability for the left side is provided. Although EtherCAT integration offers a wide range of expansion capabilities. Other master/slave fieldbus connections (PROFIBUS, CANopen, DeviceNet) or communication interfaces (RS232, RS422/RS485) and all other signal types accessible via EtherCAT can be directly connected as EtherCAT terminals. Two of the independent Gigabit Ethernet ports and four USB 2.0 interfaces are available. A commercially available Beckhoff control panel or DVI monitor can be connected to the DVI D interface. A serial port (RS232/RS422/RS485) or fieldbus connection with master or slave function can be added as that optional interface mandatory. An interchangeable Compact Flash card located behind an externally accessible flap is used as a boot and storage medium. The built-in 1-second capacitive inverter provides secure backup of persistent application data to the Compact Flash card. The date and time are buffered via a replaceable battery. The operating system can be Windows CE or Windows Embedded Standard. The TwinCAT Automation Software turns a CX5000 system into a powerful PLC and motion control system that can operate with or without visualization.

PLC, Motion Control and Visualization

As a DIN-rail IPC and in conjunction with Beckhoff's TwinCAT software, the CX50x0 offers the same functionality as large industrial PCs. In PLC terms, up to four IEC 61131 virtual processors can be programmed with up to four tasks each, with a minimum cycle time of 50 μs. All IEC 61131-3 languages ​​can be used. Additionally, features are available for Motion Control applications, such as simple point-to-point motions. In addition to the real-time execution of control tasks, TwinCAT's real-time kernel ensures that enough time remains at the user interface (HMI), to communicate with the real-time components via software interfaces like ADS or OPC.

Softwares

In combination with the TwinCAT automation software, the CX50x0 industrial PC becomes a powerful IEC 61131-3 PLC with up to four user tasks. In addition, Motion Control tasks can also be executed. Depending on the cycle time required, several servo axes can be controlled. Even special functions such as flying saw, electronic gearbox and cam plate can be realized.
